| | with exams and deadlines looming i decided to make this a very | |
| | mellow show and featured excerpts from the top 6 albums listed | |
| | (somewhat obscurely) on a reposting of a '96 survey of classic | |
| | ambient albums which i found whilst browsing a russian website | |
| | at <http://users.mark-itt.ru/dbender/rus/survey.htm>. i played | |
| | tracks from the top albums in reverse order, starting with two | |
| | tied in 5th position - the definitive ambient-house journey by | |
| | the klf, 'chill out' from 1990, and the recently reissued 'air | |
| | ii', one of literally dozens of albums written by pete namlook | |
| | (reportedly it took him a whole two weeks to write this one as | |
| | opposed to his normal one day!). in fourth place were f.s.o.l. | |
| | with the organic tones of their 2CD 'lifeforms' album and then | |
| | came the aphex twin with a track from his often haunting album | |
| | 'selected ambient works ii'. pipped into 2nd place by just one | |
| | vote was brian eno with his ultra-minimal effort 'ambient 4/on | |
| | land' and top of the chart were global communications with the | |
| | contemplative '76:14' - worthy winners although all six albums | |
| | are classics. interestingly four of the six albums came out in | |
| | 1994 - obviously a good year for ambient music! next week i'll | |
| | be playing a top selection of fine laid-back dub-tinged tunes. | |
