| | this year i'm taking an alphabetical look at early 1990's rave | |
| | music: old skool hardcore and jungle plus cheesy top-40 dance! | |

| | today's show focused mainly on two acts that were popular both | |
| | over and underground - shut up & dance and slipmatt. shut up & | |
| | dance (both the band and the recording label of the same name) | |
| | were formed in london in '88 by p.j. and smiley. they wrote in | |
| | quite a variety of styles over the early 1990's but i featured | |
| | some of their more ravey tracks. after two tunes from skin up, | |
| | the second half of the show was then dedicated to dj slipmatt: | |
| | the "godfather of rave" himself! slipmatt is best known in the | |
| | old skool rave scene for his collaboration with lime as sl2, a | |
| | partnership which gave rise to several popular singles, and of | |
| | course as a deejay in his own right! in the mid and later 90's | |
| | he produced a lot of hardcore, now without lime, including the | |
| | infamous smd series. the 3 acts from today's show all achieved | |
| | their highest (and, in the case of skin up, only!) top-40 hits | |
| | in the first half of '92! in march 'a juicy red apple' managed | |
| | a feeble number 32, in april the original issue of 'on a ragga | |
| | tip' soared to number 4 but in may of '92 shut up & dance beat | |
| | them both when 'ravin' i'm ravin' reached a crackin' number 2! | |
