| | "u-u-u-utah saints!" | |
| | following on from focusing on sunsceem last week, today's show | |
| | plotted the history of their contemporaries - the utah saints. | |
| | the band was formed in 1991 by leeds-based deejays tim garbutt | |
| | and jez willis (sometimes joined by a drummer, doctor douglas, | |
| | who's probably best known for the "u-u-u-utah saints" chant!). | |
| | their debut release, 'what can you do for me', was soon signed | |
| | to ffrr and went on to reach number 10 in the uk charts. their | |
| | distinctive style which fused dance music with aspects of rock | |
| | and industrial - combining both the energy of live performance | |
| | and excessive (but usually credited) sampling of other artists | |
| | - obviously proved popular and their follow-up single in 1992, | |
| | 'something good', peaked at #4 in the top40. their self-titled | |
| | first album followed in 1993 along with a coupla other singles | |
| | but after that they seemed to disappear from the limelight. in | |
| | '94 they released 'i still think of you' (featuring a remix by | |
| | c.j. bolland of 'highlander' which later went on to become his | |
| | own track 'there can be only one') and in '95 there was 'ohio' | |
| | but otherwise little was heard from them aside from a range of | |
| | remixes and an appearance by dj tim in the movie '$hopping' in | |
| | 1994! in 2000, however, they relaunched themselves and they're | |
| | now very much in effect, with three new singles (still sample- | |
| | laden as ever!) and a second album (just seven years after the | |
| | first!) called 'two'. you can see more about their recent work | |
| | at the official utah saints website and read more about all of | |
| | their old releases here. [phew, that was a big one! :) - bart] | |
